In this issue we introduce you to Part 2 of this article, Part 1 was released on Wednesday 30th December 2015 which opened the discussion about whether you are using LinkedIn to its fullest potential. Tips 11 – 20 are below:

11. Share yourself. LinkedIn is your professional platform. Don’t be lazy and share multitudinous links instead of visibly sharing your expertise. Write your thoughts so others can benefit from your perception. Others notice when you share opinions, ideas and knowledge relevant to your career path.

12. Recommendations are gold. Ask your significant career stakeholders for a guided recommendation. That means contacting a current or previous employer who will focus on the qualities that are most important for your career advancement. Recommendations seldom come out of the blue, so be pro-active and let university professors, past managers and current mentors know you would appreciate a recommendation.

13. Control your LinkedIn endorsements. Endorsements have a habit of taking off before you’ve had a chance to reign them in. Try to manage them strategically. Anything random that is non-career related should be rejected. Your real endorsements should relate to your best qualifications and skills – they will form a list you will be proud to acknowledge.

14. Personalise your LinkedIn page. You can make your profile public by having your name in your LinkedIn URL. For instance, instead of www.linkedin.com/6y8sj7vs, you can change it to www.linkedin.com/in/janedoe. Be aware that this is also open to Google and other search engines, as it is your public profile which can be accessed independently of LinkedIn.

15. Find out about apps to enhance LinkedIn. ‘Apps’ refer to applications which are plugins similar to an app on your iPhone. Search for the ones that will be useful to you. For example, if you travel on business, there is an application called ‘Tripit’ that lets your connections know where you are. If you are a blogger, there is an application that allows you to post directly to LinkedIn.

16. Check out the competition. On the company pages you can find information about what a certain company does, how many people they employ, how many of their employees are connected and so on. You can see if they have hired or fired staff recently, as well as where these people came from or went to. You might want to investigate further if you see a lot of movement – it could signal an opportunity.

17. Merge your profile into a resume. With the simple linkedin messaging solutions you can turn your profile into a resume-friendly format almost instantly by using the Resume Builder tool. All you have to do is to select a resume template, build it the way you want it, and export it as a PDF that can be printed, emailed and shared.

18. Use ‘Saved Searches’. After you have conducted a search, click the ‘Save This Search’ option on the right. This allows you to save a search and to run it again when you need it. You can save up to ten job searches and three people searches. Also, you can choose to receive weekly or monthly reminders by email once new members in the network or jobs match your saved search criteria. If you are job searching, you can receive reminders daily.

19. Show your expertise. ‘LinkedIn Answers’ acts as a think tank or open brainstorming session. By offering your expertise to those in your network, you will establish trust and build your reputation as an expert. You can also use your profile’s status update to ask questions of people in your network, or share news or industry insights. Your status feed on LinkedIn works in a similar way to a Twitter timeline.

20.  Show the traffic where to go. You can create multiple links to other websites. Remember to include links to your company’s website, blog and Facebook page. Yes, you can use the entire website URL, but a better method is to use a word or phrase that describes the site to which you are linking (known as “anchor text”), and hyperlink those words to the site.
